====== Lamar L-3I Main Station ======

Lamar, CO is an underground switching main station on the L-3I hardened transcontinental cable. Lamar provided power for the L-3I cable and a span of L-1 cable to [[facilities/military/cheyenne_mountain_complex]], an AUTOVON tandem switch, and a NORTHSTAR Ground Entry Point.

The Lamar station is immediately adjacent to the [[facilities/military/lamar_hf|Lamar Air Defense Command HF Radio Site]], which likely predates the L-3I. I say this because a 1941 route map shows a K-carrier cable already in service from Denver to two sites at Lamar, speculatively perhaps the Lamar CO and the HF radio site, although this needs more research. The cable terminates at Lamar and, given the small volume of long-distance traffic to southeastern Colorado in the 1940s, there must have been something in particular there to justify the cable.
