AUTOVON, the Automatic Voice Network, was a military telephone network operated by AT&T. There's a lot more writing to do about it!

The Autovon Routing Guide or “Orange Book” (available from TCI Library) is a valuable resource. Besides an in-depth explanation of the unique “polygrid” routing algorithm used in AUTOVON, it has a lengthy appendex with the prefixes assigned to each AUTOVON switch—serving as a list of users attached to each one.
